Signs that mean go now, not in the morning
If your dog or cat is showing any of these, treat it as an emergency and head to a 24-hour hospital.
- Trouble breathing, choking, or constant coughing
- Collapse, unable to stand, or sudden weakness
- A seizure, or several in a row
- Bleeding that will not stop
- Hit by a car, a fall, or any serious injury
- Repeated vomiting or retching with nothing coming up, especially in a deep-chested dog
- A swollen, hard, painful belly
- Straining to urinate and producing nothing, particularly a male cat
- Suspected poisoning, or eating something they should not have
- Pale white or blue gums
- Difficulty giving birth
- Eye injury, or a sudden bulging or closed eye
- Severe pain, crying out, or refusing to be touched
- Heatstroke, or a very high body temperature
If you are unsure, err on the side of going. An emergency team would far rather see a pet who turns out to be fine.
